New boxer engine unveiled by Subaru

New boxer engine unveiled by SubaruSubaru has recently pulled the cover from its latest 2.0 liter boxer engine codenamed FB20. We're talking here about an improved version of the already used EJ20 engine. But what's so great about a new engine? After all there are new engines created every year.
Indeed, it's true, but this particular engine represents the next generation of Boxer Subaru engines (the third actually) and for all it takes, Subaru officials have announced that the new Impreza will come fitted with this new FB20 power unit.
As it was proved in the production test, the FB20 features improved power specs, lower emissions and a better fuel economy that will go to about 10% higher than in the actual line of engines.
On the other hand, there is a small disappointment as the FB20 doesn't feature a direct injection system, something very common in modern engines. Anyway, this lack is compensated by the redesigned combustion chambers, chain driven cams and connection rods that have made way for better performance without affecting the overall functionality. Actually, the overall design even allows the installation and maintenance without separating the engine block.
None the less, one of the best features of this new engine is the increase in piston stroke without affecting the size of the engine, made possible by the modified valve train and redesigned block and head.
So, on an overall basis, this entry level engine offers better performance and fuel economy but still leaves the impression that there was a lot more that could've been done. It remains to be seen how the power unit will act once mounted on the new generation of Subaru cars.
