The devastating tsunami that followed the massive earthquake in Japan last week has seriously affected the most important giants in the auto industry, among which Honda, Nissan and Toyota find a place. The representatives of these car manufacturers have recently announced that they intend to donate $3.75 million each for recovery efforts in the communities affected by the disaster. Besides the contribution in money, Nissan's objectives include the supply with vehicles, such as trucks and forklifts, as well as the donation of medical supplies and daily commodities which include the support of blood donation activities, antiseptics, masks, promotion, matching donation from Nissan employees and blankets. While Honda is looking towards the provision of goods and services, Honda plans to donate 1,000 power generators along with 5,000 gas canisters to those people who have no electricity left. However, the three automakers were somehow forced by the circumstances to close some of their plants in Japan as Honda suspended all production activities at its plants from Sayama, Saitama, Tochigi, Suzuka and Hammatsu, completed by all facilities in the Tochigi area, where the damage proved to be more serious, from March 14 through March 20. Also, the production at the Kumamoto factory will be suspended by Honda from March 15 through 20. Nissan has also taken some decisions by suspending the production activities at Iwaki and Tochigi plants until March 18, followed by the Shatai, Kyushu, Yokohama and Oppama plants, which will be closed until March 16. The Hokkaido, Tohoku, Iwate and Miyagi plants from Toyota were closed and all the employees were evacuated to safer areas.
Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Suzuki were affected by the earthquake, thus forcing to stop or slow down production.
