The new BMW Active E(lectric) has been unveiled at the Detroit Motor ShowBMW Active E is the ready for production version of the 2010 Detroit Motor Show EV concept. But what's really interesting is that BMW wants to use the Active E as an extended testing platform for its electric technology that later on will be incorporated in to the German car manufacturer's 2013 Megacity EV model.
The power for this model comes from three lithium-ion batteries mounted where the engine, transmission and fuel tank are in a standard car. Also, these three batteries insure the power supply not only for the drive train but also for the heating and lighting needs of the new Active E. The power trains is made out of a synchronous motor that goes as far as to produce 168 hp (125 kw) and 250 Nm of torque, just enough for the car to go from 0 to 60 in 9 seconds only to top at an electronically limited top speed of 90 mph.
Even better for its customers, this fully electrical version of the 1 Series Coupe will also feature a recuperated kinetic energy system and a gliding mode where the car will be moved just by its own kinetic energy. And as a bonus the EV can be charged from a regular house hold socket is as little as 7 hours.
Unfortunately this is not going to be a street car as BMW intends to lease all the 1,000 units that will be produced, to select customers in the USA, Europe and China.
