E-tron family gets bigger thanks to Audi A1 e-tron Audi seems to be taking this whole ``the electric cars are the solution of tomorrow`` thing very seriously. Practically, at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the German automaker will be showing the third Audi e-tron concept in a period of less than a year. This time we are talking about the Audi A1 e-tron. The Audi A1 e-tron is supposed to ``show that Audi`s expertise in electric drive systems extends down into the compact car segment``. Right. Now, that we have that all cleared up, let`s continue with more practical things.

The Audi A1 e-tron is supposed to have a range of only 50 kilometers (31 miles) while on electricity alone. This kind of performance is extremely weak. Now come on, you can barely use it for going to work, stop for some groceries and coming back home. Anyway, the electric powertrain of the Audi A1 e-tron develops a power of 102 horsepower or 75 kilowatts.

Thanks to Felix Wankel, the German automaker will be presenting something new in the world of range extending engines. More precisely, a generator that has an output of 20 horsepower will be mated to the single rotor engine of the new Audi A1 e-tron. When the RE rotary is in use, the range is extended by 124 miles or 200 kilometers. The Audi A1 e-tron is supposed to be extremely environmental friendly even when running on gasoline. Thus, the Audi A1 e-tron will have a level of 45 grams of carbon dioxide emissions per kilometers while achieving a fuel economy of 124 mpg or a fuel consumption of 1.9 liters per 100 kilometers.
